What is the difference between social anxiety and shyness, what causes it, what stops it, what are the signs and symptoms and how is it treated?
I have taken an interest on social anxiety; as a child growing up with a single mum it has been hard watching her suffer from social anxiety and as a result has affected my childhood. I want to research this to investigate awareness and treatment to stop social anxiety. I plan to research this by internet research, psychiatrists from the Royal Adelaide Hospital and Lyell McEwin Hospital, counselling (Mental Health Hotline), community help (beyond blue), universities (UNI SA and Adelaide University) walk in mental health clinics, children mental health teams and mental health groups (Eastern Mental Health Service).
I will research into each of the clinical sides of social anxiety as my main focus. I will investigate what causes it, what stops it, what the signs and symptoms are and how it is treated. I will look at numerous cases of social anxiety and shyness to be able to really narrow down the difference. I am unsure what ages in particular it is most common in but I will research over a range of ages.
I will use and gain the following capabilities; personal and social skills, critical and creative thinking. I will gain social skills from interviews and primary sources of research. I will gain critical and creative thinking by using a webpage and looking at people other than my mother who have social anxiety.
The ethical issues with this assignment are finding information that I am able to interpret. Many health professions are reluctant to give out information and put their professional name against it in case the information provided is interpreted incorrectly. I need to gain consent from professionals in order to use their information and reference them on my website.
To complete this investigation I will create a website to promote and bring awareness to social anxiety compared to shyness. I want to reduce numbers of social anxiety and let people finally feel free to voice their opinion. I am aware that this may change due to my information providers not wanting the information further published, in which case I may need to resort back to a pamphlet.
